About Us

Welcome to the best in the west.

Our club, which was established in 1994, trains in Itosu Shito-ryu Kai Karate. This style’s main feature is that there are no wasteful moves and that it is very fast but still very powerful. Although we are a traditional Karate style we are also involved in competition Karate and practice modern self defense techniques.

Our club currently has fifteen black belts ranging from first Dan to third Dan, actively training under our head instructor Murry Burrows 4th Dan. Mr. Burrows has been training in Martial Arts for nearly thirty years, with twenty years in this particular style. He is a past assistant Queensland coach, state judge in both Kumite and Kata and the only person to successfully teach Karate as a senior subject at a state high school in Queensland. Laidley High, where he teaches, has been the champion school in the Queensland schools Karate competition twice.

Our main Dojo or Hombu Dojo, is located at Redbank Plains State High School in the performing Arts building. We believe that our Dan grades have an active role in developing Karate within our club, so they are used often to teach Kyu grades. At Hombu we generally have a teaching team of two 3rd Dans and one first Dan Black Belt, under the instruction of Sensei Burrows who is a 4th Dan Black Belt. At our Laidley Dojo we have two female first Dan instructors, both members of the Queensland Karate team, who also teach under the direction of Sensei Burrows.

We teach a new dynamic system of Karate curriculum that is delivered over a ten week period to five levels of grades. Although our grades train independently mostly, they do come together to train as a mixed class at least once a week. The results from this have been very good with our members advancing at an increased rate.
