Training - Self Defence

Self-defence is the primary reason most students start karate. Skills and techniques gained from karate not only help in situations where someone is attacked, but also assists in the reduction in the chances of being caught in a dangerous situation.

Self-defence has to start with awareness. If you are aware of your surroundings, the people around you, and what your actions tell about you, then you will have more control over what happens. A good thing to remember when it comes to awareness is the 3 Stupids Rule – “Don’t go to stupid places, with stupid people, to do stupid things”. Following this rule will greatly reduce your chance of getting into dangerous situations.

The next stage is confidence and ties into what your actions tell about you. If you have lapsed in awareness and found yourself in a situation where you are uncomfortable, you must appear confident. Walk with a distinct determination and make it look like you are going somewhere and people are expecting you.

The final stage is the confrontation. If you get to this stage something has gone wrong and trouble is imminent. There are an enormous amount of factors and triggers in a confrontation, and giving advice without training can be deadly. Needless to say we will give you tools that you can use if you find yourself in one of these situations.
